Grayslake Man Gets Life In Prison In Fatal Stabbing

Jesus Vargas was convicted of fatally stabbing Brian Mahdee more than 40 times in 2022.

A Grayslake man who fatally stabbed another man more than 40 times during a 2022 confrontation in Round Lake Beach has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jesus Vargas, 33, received the sentence Thursday after a Lake County jury convicted him in March of first-degree murder in the killing of Brian Mahdee, the Daily Herald is reporting. Prosecutors argued Vargas carried out a brutal, unprovoked attack, while the defense claimed he acted in self-defense.

During Thursday's sentencing hearing, Mahdee's family described Vargas as remorseless and spoke about the lasting impact of the killing. Judge Mark Levitt cited Vargas' violent criminal history, the brutality of the attack and his lack of remorse before imposing the life sentence, according to the Daily Herald.
