Grayslake North Students Raise Awareness of Homelessness

PUBLIC SERVICE PRACTICUM, DISTRICT 127, FOOD DRIVE,

Overnight Sleep Out Kicks off the Annual GNHS Food Drive

Reporters and photographers are invited to come to Grayslake North High School to meet students as they prepare for an experiential learning event about the impacts of poverty and homelessness on the night of November 2, 2017. Students will be simulating a night of homelessness. They get to bring a few belongings and set up boxes for sleeping in the courtyard in the center of the school building. To get as close to the effect as possible, students have to go to class the next day and work through the day. Our hope is to raise awareness and inspire people to get involved with helping the homeless community.

This experience is part of the Public Service Practicum course’s study of poverty. The event is an early kickoff to the school’s annual food drive, which runs through December 1. Donations of nonperishable food can be dropped off at North before December 1. Volunteers are especially needed on Saturday, November 11 between 10am and 4pm as teams collect food from local neighborhoods.
