Grayslake Public Library to Display District 46 Students Artwork in March

Plus, the library will be hosting a plethora of art programs for all ages in March.

The Grayslake Area Public Library has teamed up with Community Consolidated School District 46 and Foundation 46 in celebration of Youth Art Month. Art pieces by CCSD 46 students will be on display in the library Friday, March 3 through Friday, March 24, 2017, according to a news release.

The Opening Night Reception will be Friday, March 3, 2017 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and kicks off a month of celebrating the arts in the library, according to the news release.

The ART-tastic evening event is free and open to the public. Art will be on display throughout the entire library and viewers will enjoy hands-on activities, light refreshments and live jazz music from The Jim Jacobs Trio. Jacobs and his trio have performed all over the Chicago area and their incredible talent will enhance this uplifting event, perfect for the whole family and all who want to celebrate creativity, according to a news release.

In addition to the artwork on display, the following art-related programs will be held during the month of March.

Youth Programs

All youth programs are free and require registration. Children out of Grayslake Area Public Library’s district may register starting two weeks before the program.

WonderArt

Fridays, March 3, April 7, & May 5; 10 – 10:30 am

Explore! Imagine! Use your senses! This is art! Our time together will be about the art experience; it is the process, not the product. Please be sure to dress for a mess! 18-36 months with an adult caregiver

The Art of Collage

Friday, March 10; 4 – 4:45 pm

Discover and create awesome art with scraps of paper, yarn, fabric, and other odds and ends. Add some glue. Anything works for collage! Grades K-2

LET’S CELEBRATE FAMOUS ARTISTS

Wednesday, March 22; 4-4:45 pm

Who is your favorite artist? Do you like watercolor? Acrylics? Sketching? Join us as we explore different artists and artistic styles. Come dressed to get messy! Grades K-2

Thumb-Thing Special

Monday, March 27 at 6:30 – 7:15 pm

Discover how to create animals, people, and fanciful creatures using just your thumb and a stamp pad. Grades K-2

Twenty Fourth Annual Kite Decorating Contest

March 31- April 29

Pick up a kite form, decorate it at home and bring it back to the library. Everyone earns a small prize and there will be winners in three age groups. All kites will be displayed! Celebrate spring with us! Open to anyone up to 6th grade.

Ticketed Youth Event

Seating is limited and free tickets are required and available at the Youth Services Desk. Families out of Grayslake Area Public Library’s district may pick up tickets starting two weeks before the event.

THE ART OF DESIGN

Sunday, March 19; 2:00 pm

Dan Laib explores the basic elements of artistic design using storytelling, hand-painted puppets, props and live art demonstrations. This show will have a lot of audience participation and is sure to entertain, inform, and inspire! Grades K-6

Teen Programs

No registration required for teen programs, feel free to drop-in and bring a friend! Teen programs are free and open to anyone in grades 7-12.

Thursday Teen Book Chat

Thursday, March 16; 4:30 – 6 pm

Love to read? Stop by to talk about your favorite books! Hear about what other Teens are reading and what new titles are coming to the library. March will include a discussion of Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi and copies are available now to check out.

Teen ARTS Group

Monday, March 20; 4:30 – 6:00 pm

Aspiring teen authors, musicians, and artists are encouraged to come and share work with your peers. Activities and supplies will be available to help develop your desired craft.

Adult Programs

Art Appreciation 101

Tuesday, March 21; 7:00 – 9:00 pm

Do you want to understand more about a painting or sculpture than what the label on the wall tells you about it? In this slide lecture, Jeff Mishur, owner of Art Excursions, offers an introduction to the appreciation of art. Free and open to anyone age 12 or above. Registration is required.

Organize Your Photos

Saturday, March 18; 3:00 – 4:00 pm

Learn how to organize and manage your photos. We will discuss free online photo storage options such as Shutterfly, SnapFish, Instagram, and Google Photos. Free and open to anyone age 12 or above. Registration is required.
