Gurnee Family Sues University Of Notre Dame After Son's Fall

The boy was 18 years old in January 2019 when he suffered a traumatic brain injury after falling from a second-floor staircase.

GURNEE, IL — The family of a Gurnee teen who suffered a severe brain injury after falling 30 feet during a party at an on-campus residence hall at University of Notre Dame in January 2019 has filed a lawsuit claiming the school failed to properly protect their son. The Chicago Tribune is reporting the lawsuit was filed Tuesday in St. Joseph County, Indiana.

Sean Tennant, a freshman at the university in South Bend, Indiana, and 18 years old at the time, fell from a second floor stairwell, landing on the concrete basement floor inside Sorin Hall on Jan. 27, 2019, according to the article. The lawsuit claims the adult rector was not inside the hall at the time and did not take the right steps to ensure the students' safety.

Lawyers for the family also say Notre Dame has a "quasi-fraternity atmosphere" that has been actively encouraged in it residence halls — partially as a way to keep students living on campus throughout their college years, according to the Chicago Tribune.
