Sometimes, there are people who see something in us that we only hope for, and they encourage us not to let go of that dream. We fondly remember that and it may influence the trajectory of our lives, also.

However, if we are incredibly lucky, those mentors or benefactors continue in our lives and become part of a community that lasts a lifetime. Last night I witnessed this scenario at the Village Church of Gurnee many times over and it was a beautiful thing. I was in tears, which came quite easily for me.

The event was a fundraiser for Jo Dooley, who is going through an epic fight with cancer. She is the subject of my story, and may I dare say, the hero we came to celebrate. Saturday, April 13th, hundreds of people came to participate in raffles, listen to incredible music (performed by former students, colleagues, and friends), take a chance on a silent auction item (great offerings), and eat some tasty treats.

So, why were we all there, and who is this, Jo Dooley? Well, first she is a lifelong resident of the area and has been an owner of A-Major Music for 40 years, presently in Gurnee. Jo and A-Major Music have been part of the history of Gurnee for many decades, but more importantly, they have been the hub of the music community, as well.

Saturday, current students, and former ones came together to honor Jo and thank her for her efforts to be that person who encouraged and connected in a meaningful way. A person who makes a difference.

A-Major served the area, as any retail business would. It had instruments, sheet music, accessories, private lessons, and repair services. It also had, Jo. She has been a strong, independent woman who also has an exceptional way of bringing people together, solving issues, and generating confidence in fledgling musicians. Unfortunately, with Jo’s illness, the store will be closing. There is a sale going on with limited hours at 3701 Grand Avenue Suite B Gurnee IL 60031.

Jo Dooley was there in the audience, but she was not well. Cancer really stinks. She is fighting with all she has. Seeing the outpouring of love for Jo was amazing. She’s a fighter, but she can’t do it alone. It is time for everyone who knows her to help support her as she goes through this terrible disease. Emotionally and financially, she needs our help.

All proceeds from Saturday night will go toward her needs. She was always looking to help others and it is our time to return the favor. As the song goes, “…that’s what friends are for.”
