Coroner IDs Lake Co. Man Found Dead In Jail Cell

The 51-year-old Barrington man was taken into custody about eight hours before he was found unresponsive in his cell, police said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 51-year-old inmate at the Lake County Jail who was found dead in his cell Friday morning, about eight hours after he was taken into custody, has been identified as Patrick McCann of Barrington, authorities said.

A Lake County Sheriff's Office correctional officer was conducting rounds in Pod 1 East at the jail at about 8:30 a.m. when he saw the inmate, a Barrington man, lying on his bed in an unresponsive state, according to a news release. The officer entered the cell and attempted to wake up the inmate, but he remained unresponsive.

The correctional officer immediately began first aid and nursing staff and an ambulance responded to the cell, according to authorities. Officers used an automated external defibrillator and performed CPR on the man before paramedics arrived and attempted life-saving measures.

The inmate was pronounced dead after medical care was provided for "an extended period of time," according to a news release.

Authorities say the man was arrested just after midnight on an outstanding warrant for violating an order of protection. He was assigned to a double-inmate cell, but did not have a cellmate.

Officers conducted rounds about 30 minutes before the inmate was found unresponsive, and he appeared to be OK at that time, according to the news release.

Preliminary results from an autopsy show McCann had several underlying medical conditions and that McCann had no significant injuries. A final determination of McCann's cause of death is pending toxicology testing.

The cause of the inmate's death remains under investigation, and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force will be assisting the sheriff's office in the probe.
