Joy-Riding Thief Steals Minibike, Golf Cart, $200K Porsche: Police

The 34-year-old Lake Villa man was arrested Tuesday in Wauconda following the crime spree, authorities said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL β€” A joy-riding thief stole everything from a golf cart to a minibike to a $200,000 Porsche during a crime spree Tuesday morning in Lake County, authorities said.

Drew Nelson, 34, of the 25100 block fo Monaville Road in unincorporated Lake Villa, was taken into custody after he stole his final vehicle Tuesday morning, a six-person specialized golf cart from Monster Powersports in Wauconda, and lead police on a short chase, according to police.

After Wauconda Police spotted him on the stolen golf cart in the area of North Old Rand and Bonner roads, officials say he sped across traffic and onto private property. Police caught up to him and stopped him in a parking lot at 1059 N. Old Rand Road in Wauconda, where he was arrested, according to a Wauconda Police Department news release.

Officials said the crime spree started earlier in the morning after Nelson stole a small minibike, which he drove to a restaurant in the 500 block of Park Avenue in Fox Lake. He left the minibike and then took a golf cart, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

He drove that golf cart to a home in the 28300 block of Brandenburg Road in Ingleside, left it and stole a four-wheeler, police said.

He took the four-wheeler for a jaunt before returning it and stealing a 1962 Porsche, which was valued at $200,000, from the Ingleside property, according to authorities.

Nelson drove the Porsche to Monster Powersports, parked it and then stole the 2023 six-seat Evolution golf cart, according to the Wauconda Police press release.

Following his arrest by Wauconda police, local authorities filed the following charges against Nelson: theft, attempting to elude a police officer and criminal damage to property. The Lake County Sheriff's Office has filed theft over $100,000 and possession of a stolen motor vehicle charges against Nelson.

Nelson has been transported to the Lake County Jail and is expected to appear for a bond hearing Wednesday morning.
