Lake MI Water Is Coming To These Lake Co. Towns

Lake Michigan water is softer and has lower iron content, which will help eliminate fixture corrosion, officials said.

GRAYSLAKE, IL - From the Lake County Public Works Department: Lake County Public Works is committed to providing a safe and sustainable source for drinking water. In 2011, Public Works created a partnership with Lindenhurst and Lake Villa to bring Lake Michigan water to Grandwood Park, Lindenhurst, Lake Villa, and Fox Lake Hills. The project to bring Lake Michigan Water to homes in these areas is nearly complete, and customers in those areas will be switching to Lake Michigan Water over the next two weeks.

Moving to a truly reliable water source eliminates the concern about failing wells or radium in deep wells. In addition, Lake Michigan water is softer and has lower iron content, which will help eliminate fixture corrosion.

Here are a few things Lake Michigan water customers should know about the transition to the new water system:

  • As the water source changes from ground water to Lake Michigan Water, residents may notice a slight discoloration of water at first. It is normal after a major construction project to have deposits in your interior plumbing flake off due to changes in water pressure or disturbance to the water main. The discoloration, if it occurs, should not last long. More information about water discoloration can be found here.
  • As a result of switching to a new water source, customers will see an increase in their water rate starting March 29, 2019. The increase can vary depending on how much water customers use. Based on areas already served by Lake Michigan water, an average customer using 5,500 gallons of water per month will see an increase of approximately $20.00 per 2-month bill.

If you have any questions regarding the new Lake Villa or Fox Lake Hills water rate or the Lake Michigan water project, please contact the Department of Public Works at 847.377.7500 or visit the website.
