Live Symphony Concert Comes to Grayslake This Saturday Featuring Northwestern Guest Artists

On Saturday, February 7 at 7:30 PM, the Lake County Symphony Orchestra presents Triumph and Tragedy at the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts in Grayslake.

This special concert brings together professional musicians from across Lake County and surrounding communities, along with two distinguished guest artists from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music.

Leading the orchestra is Donald Schleicher, Director of Orchestras at Northwestern University. Before his current role, Maestro Schleicher spent more than two decades at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he built one of the nation’s respected collegiate orchestral programs. His career has taken him around the world, and many of his former students now hold conducting positions internationally.

Joining him is pianist Hannah Zhang, a rising Northwestern student artist who will perform Mozart’s dramatic Piano Concerto No. 20. This piece reveals a darker, more emotional side of Mozart and offers audiences a chance to hear a young soloist at an exciting moment in their career.

The program also includes Beethoven’s powerful Egmont Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, often called the Pathétique. If you love the sweeping emotional storytelling of film composers like John Williams, this music lives in that same world. It is cinematic, expressive, and best experienced live.

No classical background is required. Just come, listen, and enjoy.
