Murder Charges Filed In Fatal Shooting

LAKE COUNTY, IL — A 22-year-old Waukegan man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Elliot Jones that happened near Gurnee last month, authorities said Friday. Donterrance M. Nixon, of the 600 block of Lenox Avenue in Waukegan, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held on a $3 million bail following his arrest Monday, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say Nixon and Jones were acquaintances and, prior to the shooting, Nixon offered to sell Jones marijuana. During a probe into Jones' death, investigators determined Nixon had no intentions of selling Jones marijuana but instead planned to rob him, according to the news release.

Nixon arrived at Jones' home in 36900 block of North Grandwood Drive in unincorporated Gurnee at about 10 p.m. on May 29, and Jones approached the vehicle where Nixon and his driver were seated. Nixon then stole Jones' cash and as the driver was pulling away, Jones attempted to open the car door and get his money back, police said.

An occupant in the vehicle shot Jones, according to the news release. Police connected Nixon to the robbery and arrested him this past week on a warrant for violating the sex offender registry.

Nixon is next expected in court on July 1. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
