A new World War I exhibition will open on Saturday, October 11, with a reception featuring snacks based on recipes of the era. Over There: Grayslake in World War I, explores the stories of local veterans, as well as tales from the home front.

The show includes a recreated trench and dramatic recordings of authentic excerpts from veterans’ letters. Uniforms, images and artifacts from the collection of the Grayslake Historical Society and local families make this an engaging exhibition.

In support of this program, on Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m., author and historian Terry Dyer will discuss Camp Grant during World War I. Many of our local soldiers trained at Camp Grant or passed through there on their way home from the front.

A second exhibition, The Gathering Storm: Our Community on the Eve of World War I opened in the museum’s upper gallery in August and shares local and national developments in governance, education, entertainment, business, technology and more, juxtaposed against the backdrop of a growing world crisis.

Rare images and artifacts from the collection of the Grayslake Historical Society paint a portrait of our community from a century ago. Both shows include hands on components for younger visitors.
