Deputy Fatally Shoots Man With Meat Cleaver: Lake County Sheriff

The man lunged at a Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy with a meat cleaver before he was fatally shot near Round Lake Wednesday afternoon.

LAKE COUNTY, IL β€” A Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy fatally shot a man near Round Lake Wednesday afternoon after the man lunged at the officer with a meat cleaver, authorities said.

Police were called to a home in the 34200 block of Barberry Court in unincorporated Round Lake at about 4:05 p.m. for a report of a man who was bleeding and who may have taken his life, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived, they found the man unconscious, unresponsive and with a significant amount of blood around him, police said. A deputy checked his pulse and started to remove pieces of his clothing while trying to determine where his wounds were.

As the deputy was attempting life-saving measures, the man woke up and immediately retrieved a meat cleaver that was next to him, according to authorities.

The man lunged at the deputy and then charged at the officer and another person in the home before the deputy shot him, police said.

The deputy and another deputy who arrived at the scene began life-saving measures before paramedics arrived and took over, police said. The man was taken to an area hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

The deputy involved in the attack was also taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

Per state law and sheriff’s office protocol, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force was requested to conduct an independent investigation of the incident, and that investigation is ongoing.
