Red Cross Opens Shelters Following Flooding

The American Red Cross has responded to areas affected by flooding in Lake, McHenry and Cook counties.

The American Red Cross is providing help to hundreds of people affected by severe flooding and power outages in northern Illinois including Cook, Lake and McHenry counties. Red Cross responders were called to the scene early this morning and began providing assistance including shelter, food, water and comfort to those in need, according to a news release from the Red Cross. The following Red Cross shelters are now open to provide resources to people affected by flooding:

  • Magee Middle School, 500 N Cedar Lake, Round Lake Beach
  • Foss Park Youth Center, 1730 Lewis Ave, North Chicago
  • The Chapel in Grayslake, 25270 IL- 60, Grayslake

The following Red Cross shelter opens at 6 p.m.:

  • North Park Village Nature Center, 5801 N Pulaski Road, Chicago

Red Cross crews are currently in the affected communities working with residents to assess needs including lodging, food and mental health support, according to a news release.

The Red Cross invites all residents who have been displaced to come to any of the shelters and meet with a caseworker and get a hot meal.

"The unfortunate flooding that occurred through northern Illinois has impacted hundreds of residents,” said Celena Roldan, CEO of the Chicago and Northern Illinois Red Cross. “The Red Cross is in the community currently assisting those impacted. Shelters opened today so that affected residents have a safe place to stay.”
