Driver Charged With DUI After Falling Asleep at Wheel in Left Turn Lane of Intersection: Police

The teen was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL - A 19-year-old Vernon Hills man was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs after he fell asleep at the wheel at the intersection of Milwaukee and Winchester in Libertyville last week.

Zachary J. Wittek, of 471 Tyler Court in Vernon Hills, was also cited for improper parking on a roadway and no driver's license on person, according to a Libertyville Police Department report.

Authorities found Wittek asleep in his vehicle with the transmission gear in drive at about 12:48 a.m. on April 1. Wittek's foot was on the brake, police said.

When police woke Wittek, he showed signs of impairment and officers performed field sobriety tests, which indicated he was driving under the influence, according to police. Wittek admitted to smoking marijuana an hour earlier.

He was arrested and his vehicle was towed. He was later released on a $3,000 personal recognizance bond.

He is next expected in court on April 22.
