Village To Buy Property To Increase Green Space, Prevent Flooding

The Grayslake Village Board approved the purchase of an abandoned building near downtown Grayslake.

GRAYSLAKE, IL — Village officials are in the process of purchasing and preserving 18 acres of open space in an effort to prevent flooding near downtown Grayslake, according to the Daily Herald.

Grayslake village board trustees last week approved the purchase of an abandoned building at 463 Center Street, which is across from the Dog n Suds Drive-In and that village officials plan to demolish, according to the article. The building is located on the south side of Center Street and is in disrepair, according to village documents.

The 18 acres of green space that will be preserved includes that building at the northern end and is triangular in shape, running along Center Street, South Barron Boulevard and the railway.

The decision comes as village officials learned in recent years the importance of upping the amount of green space in central Grayslake after heavy rains in 2017, which lead to many business and homes flooding.
