Woodland Intermediate Students Recognized For Attendance Record
The school placed in the top ten for highest attendance rate in Lake County during Attendance Week last month.
District 50: September is Attendance Awareness Month, a national campaign highlighting the importance of regular attendance for student achievement. Woodland Intermediate placed in the top ten for highest attendance rate according to the Lake County Regional Office of Education during Attendance Week September 9 - 13, 2019.
This year, 151 schools participated in the competition representing 99,999 students in Lake County! Woodland District 50 participated in Attendance Week by hosting a variety of spirit days to make school fun and inviting for our students. Students were encouraged to come to school with hats, crazy socks, pajamas and spirit wear. At the Primary School, students wore dots in an effort to get “spotted” for good attendance with the promise that “We’re saving you a SPOT every day at school”. Students at Intermediate were entered into drawings for raffle prizes for participating in each spirit day. Intermediate School Principal Derek Straight said, “When children miss school, they are missing out on the opportunityto learn. But this is a problem we can solve by taking a positive approach and engaging students and their families early on. We do this by letting them know we are counting on them to be part of our learning community each and every
day.” Each Woodland District 50 school sent communication home to families the week prior to Attendance Week to help build excitement and promote the spirit days, while also raising
awareness about the importance of consistent attendance. Throughout the week, building principals and teachers were posting pictures on social media tagged with #LifeintheW to showcase enthusiastic participation in spirit week activities.
“We appreciate the recognition from the Lake County Regional Office of Education and I’m proud of our students for reaching the Top Ten. The 5th grade student representatives from Intermediate School who attended the award ceremony this morning were able to see the excitement first hand. An event like this shows our students that even young kids can make a difference in our community,” explained Principal Straight.
