GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – After the Illinois House of Representatives voted to reject a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) meant to raise their legislative salaries, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, issued the following statement:

“I do not believe lawmakers should be getting pay raises, and that’s why I voted to reject this pay increase. I also voted to freeze legislative pay last year.

In addition, over the past few weeks, I voted 11 times to freeze property taxes for hardworking families. Neither the spending plan nor tax relief measures succeeded due to the governor’s inaction and a failure to get the required number of votes to ensure passage.

It is wholly unfair that hardworking families will be harmed because of the governor’s refusal to extend vital services and programs that protect our seniors, keep our roads safe, and care for our vulnerable children.

I remain committed to working with all members of the General Assembly and the governor as we work to craft a budget that does not give raises to elected officials and one that preserves the necessary programs and services seniors, children, families, veterans, and emergency personnel depend on.”
