Grayslake, Ill – Every May, countless people across the country commemorate National Military Appreciation Month and while local towns honor the brave sacrifices of veterans and their families with parades and flag ceremonies, state lawmakers like Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, are pushing for policies that honor and assist our county’s members of the Armed Forces.

“It is an important and proud part of our tradition to honor service members with flag ceremonies and parades. However, I believe it is just as important to honor their service by pushing for policies that aid and support them and their families,” Yingling said. “We have to make sure the men and women who give up the most for the democratic freedoms we enjoy are treated with the utmost respect and provided every opportunity of financial relief.”

Yingling has championed several pieces of legislation that help veterans and their families. In the spring, he sponsored House Bill 1404 which expands the Illinois’ Let Them Rest in Peace Act by strengthening the prohibitions against protesting during military funerals. Yingling also supported measures that aim to lessen tax burdens on veterans and also provides them discounts on various items. House Bill 3686 creates a discount card for veterans at various retailers and House Bill 159 significantly expands the criteria for which disabled veterans can claim homestead tax exemptions.

“I am proud to push for policies that honor our veterans, and I am beyond grateful for the service and sacfrices they continue to make,” Yingling said. “Further, I will continue my unwavering support for policies that lessen financial burdens on our military families and all families across Illinois.”

Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
