GRAYSLAKE, Ill – To help save more lives and to assist public safety officials, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is calling on the governor to sign anti-Heroin legislation immediately.

“The legislature recently worked to pass comprehensive anti-Heroin legislation to better equip our police and emergency personnel with the tools they need to go after dangerous drug dealers and save the lives of substance abuse victims,” Yingling said. “I call on the governor to enact this bill into law, so we can better attack an issue that terrorizes our communities.”

Yingling was a chief co-sponsor of House Bill 1, which was passed out of both legislative chambers with overwhelming bi-partisan support last month. The measure would implement a system for greater communication and information sharing between hospitals, other medical professionals and public safety personnel and help track statewide trends of drug use and overdoses so first responders can monitor patterns and be better equipped to treat overdoses. Such data would also help law enforcement track patterns to isolate problematic areas where dealers are most likely to be. In addition, House Bill 1 would give more victims of heroin addiction opportunities to receive drug treatment and would also expand the criteria for who is authorized to administer the lifesaving Narcan drug.

“Through my participation in the Heroin Taskforce and membership to various committees and local groups, I know heroin continues to be a challenge we need to address,” Yingling said. “I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the political aisle, local and state law enforcement, and other first responders to make certain our communities are safe from drugs.”

House Bill 1 awaits approval by the Governor. Yingling represents the 62nd District, which contains portions of Gages Lake, Grayslake, Hainesville, the Round Lake communities, Wauconda and Wildwood.
