New report reveals which colleges received the most in private gifts. Let's just say Northwestern University has some very generous donors.

In 2014, private donations to public and private universities throughout the nation reached a historic high -- $37.45 billion -- which some experts credit to an “explosion of wealth” from improving stock markets.

Several universities in Illinois raised incredible sums of cash. Northwestern University was one of five U.S. institutions that reported receiving a single donation of more than $100 million – just a fraction of the total gifts the school received in 2014.

Take a look at how much money the state’s public and private colleges collected through private donations last year. It will make you wonder why some of these schools keep raising tuition.
