Local teens organize fundraiser for their karate teammates with special needs!

On May 12, 2018, siblings 13-year-old Julia Kerpel and 15-year-old Andrew Kerpel, both of Highland Park, held the 2nd Annual Zumba Fundraiser for Karate Can-Do. The Kerpel kids are working toward their black belts in the traditional karate program at Sensei Jeffrey Kohn's North Shore Dojo in Glenview. The Kerpels train with teammates in the Dojo's Karate Can-Do program. Developed and directed by Sensei Kohn, Karate Can-Do offers special needs kids and adults the opportunity to improve their physical, cognitive, and emotional health through karate. Karate Can-Do supports specialized programs and adaptive equipment for special needs students; tournament costs for special needs national team competitions;and, the US National Disabled Karate Team. At the Zumba event, over 50 participants danced to songs led by area Zumba instructors. Live drumming made the fundraiser a party for all!
