Illinois 2026 Voter Guide: Pritzker Vs. Bailey Rematch, Other Hot Races To Watch
Here's a look at what races Highland Park voters will be weighing in on for the Nov. 3 General Election.
Highland Park voters will decide whether to implement term limits for mayor and city council members. Under the proposal, the limits would cap service at two terms
According to a sample election ballot, this is how the referendum question will read on the ballot:
"Shall the City of Highland Park, beginning with the terms of office that commence at the April 2027 consolidated election and for each election thereafter, limit the terms of the office of Mayor and of the office of Councilmember so that no person shall be eligible to hold that respective office if that person has been previously elected to no more than two full four-year terms for that office, whether or not those terms were served consecutively, or if holding that office would cause that person to serve in that office for more than a combined total of ten years? In accordance with Illinois law, terms of office that commenced before the April 2027 consolidated election will not be considered in determining whether a person has reached these limits."
In Lake County, voters will decide whether to approve a 1 percent sales tax to help fund school facility improvements.
According to a sample election ballot, this is how the referendum question will read on the ballot:
"Shall a retailers' occupation tax and a service occupation tax (commonly referred to as a sales tax) be imposed in The County of Lake, Illinois, at a rate of 1% to be used exclusively for school facility purposes, school resource officers, and mental health professionals?"
Incumbent John Idleburg, a Democrat, will face Republican Challenger Roman Buchberger.
Idleburg, who has served as sheriff since 2018, previously worked as a Lake County sheriff's deputy and held law enforcement positions with the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Treasury Department. He is also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Buchberger is a Zion resident with 32 years of law enforcement experience and previous police administration experience.
Incumbent Brad Schneider, a Democrat, will face off against Republican candidate Carl Lambrecht.
All Highland Park voters will have several statewide contests on their ballots.
Other independent or minor-party candidates may appear in some statewide contests. Voters should consult their sample ballot for the complete candidate list.
