Caregiver Found Guilty of Stealing Thousands from Elderly HP Couple

The Chicago woman was accused of making unauthorized ATM withdrawals over a three-year period.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL - A Chicago woman was found guilty of stealing more than $100,000 from an elderly Highland Park couple over a three-year span when she served as a live-in caretaker.

Justina S. Kemokai was found guilty by a Lake County jury of three counts of financial exploitation of the elderly and three counts of financial exploitation of the disabled on Tuesday, according to the Highland Park News. She and another caretaker were accused in 2014 of stealing $184,000 from the couple through unapproved ATM withdrawals, fraudulent credit card transactions and double billings for services rendered.

The couples’ children discovered the fraudulent activity when monitoring their parents’ financial accounts and realizing some of the purchases made were not in line with their lifestyles and spending habits.
