DACA Supported By Highland Park Mayor

HIGHLAND PARK, IL - From the City of Highland Park: Mayor Nancy R. Rotering, as a member of the nonpartisan United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) on behalf of the City of Highland Park, has joined with mayors across the country in support of maintaining the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Last week, Mayor Rotering signed onto an open letter that the USCM sent to all Members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate urging Congress to pass bipartisan legislation that would allow Dreamers, young adults brought to the US as children without documentation, to earn lawful permanent residence and eventually American citizenship, if they meet certain criteria.

In response to the recent decision by President Donald Trump to terminate the DACA program, which allowed young undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to continue to live, work and study in the U.S. and contribute to the nation’s economy, leaders of the USCM issued an official statement that may be found athttps://www.usmayors.org. The USCM stated “America’s mayors stand ready to do whatever they can to assist Congress in seeing such legislation enacted into law.”

“These are our neighbors, our children’s classmates, and part of the future of our country. They do not deserve the fear and uncertainty that current events have foisted upon them,” said Mayor Rotering. “We are a nation of immigrants and have a moral responsibility to protect our community’s children and young adults – all of them. As a community we stand up for what is right.”

The City urges any and all individuals, regardless of where they live or work, who are in need of DACA advice or assistance to contact the Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic (the Clinic). To be eligible for DACA renewal, current DACA permits must have expiration dates between September 5, 2017 – March 5, 2018, and renewal applications must be filed by the October 5, 2017 deadline.
