DUI Suspect Hit Ambulance After Crew Woke Him Up: Cops

The BMW driver was charged with several offenses after incident at 41 and Park Avenue.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL - Police in Highland Park charged a man who was allegedly found slumping over the steering wheel of a vehicle and then drove into an ambulance while he was attempting to get away.

Sherman Johnson, a 49-year-old from Mississippi, was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving on a revoked license, illegal transportation of alcohol and unlawful use of a weapon for having police-grade pepper spray and a stun gun.

A report indicates the ambulance crew woke Johnson up just after 5 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Route 41 and Park Avenue. He was operating a BMW 740.

"He basically woke up and hit the accelerator and fled eastbound on Park Avenue," Highland Park Police Deputy Chief Timothy Wilinski told the Highland Park News.
