Mozart established his undeniable genius not by forging revolutionary new forms, but by elevating traditional genres to unprecedented heights of brilliance and invention. Cast in the heroic mold of the 18th-century opera seria, Idomeneo predates Mozart’s groundbreaking partnership with Lorenzo da Ponte and became the earliest of Mozart’s operas to be produced with any frequency in the world of international opera, a status it did not achieve until the 20th century (it was not heard in America until 1947). As German musicologist Alfred Einstein so aptly put it, Idomeneo is “one of those works that even a genius of the highest rank, like Mozart, could write only once in his life.”
