Kay Thomas has extensive knowledge of the Japanese ink painting art form known as sumi-e. Sumi-e is the art of extracting the essence of the object in the fewest strokes. Most often, sumi-e is painted on rice paper or silk. Kay Thomas finds her inspiration from the outdoors and beautiful scenery. Her classical paintings include the bamboo, chrysanthemum, the orchid and plum tree. Kay also has a passion for watercolor, oil, crafts, portrait painting, silkscreen printing, monoprinting and marbling. Thomas shares her love and knowledge of sumi-e painting as a teacher. She is also a member and board member of many art organizations including Sumi-e Society of America, Sumi-e Midwest and the Wilmette Art Guild.
