Full-Day Kindergarten A Possibility for District 112, But Not Next Year

Superintendent Michael Bregy says six-year wait for program to be part of consolidation is too long.

North Shore District 112 officials are exploring the possibility of full-day kindergarten in the district and would like for something to be implemented before the district is scheduled to be reconfigured six years from now.

The Highland Park News reports the district is “vowing to examine issues of space, financing, parental interest and programmatic philosophy associated with a move to full-day kindergarten between now and next fall.”

If all goes well, the program - implemented this year by their neighbor, Deerfield Schools District 109 - could become a reality for 2016-17.

The district does not have the space to operate the program at all of its elementary schools next year. Full-day kindergarten is expected to be a vital part of the district’s reconfiguration plan, but Superintendent Michael Bregy told supporters of the idea recently a six-year plus wait would be too long.

“I do think that waiting six years is unacceptable,” Superintendent Michael Bregy told supporters during a board workshop meeting April 21. “But starting in the fall is not reality. We just can’t do it with the integrity and fidelity we need to bring to the table.”
