HPFD Offers Free Smoke Alarms

Highland Park Fire Department is offering to install more than 100 free alarms.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The Highland Park Fire Department has offered to install a smoke detector in local homes for free as part of a smoke detector distribution program run by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance.

“We are excited to be able to partner with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance in providing smoke alarms for our residents," said Fire Chief Dan Pease. "Installing working smoke alarms will go a long way toward preventing burns and fire deaths.”

Highland Park firefighters received 100 smoke detectors and 14 carbon monoxide detectors from the IFSA's Operation Save A Life program. The program has offered Illinoisans with no-cost, 10-year, sealed-in battery smoke alarms.

“Every death is tragic,” said Philip Zaleski, Executive Director of the IFSA. “It is especially tragic when needless deaths could be prevented by the installation of a simple, proven, and inexpensive appliance. The presence of working smoke alarms is a proven lifesaver."

In total, 1,600 smoke detectors and 250 carbon monoxide detectors are set to be distributed by 14 different Chicago-area fire departments as part of the program.

The only requirements to get one of these free alarms: they are only supposed to be installed in owner-occupied single-family homes (not landlords or businesses), they must be installed by the Highland Park Fire Department and they must all be installed by the end of the year.
