HPHS Giants Football to Rely on Newcomers in 2015

New coach Joe Horeni takes over Giants team that was perfect in 2014 regular season.

A bevy of newcomers will guide the Highland Park High School Giants’ football team this fall, including Joe Horeni, who is entering his first season at the helm of the HPHS program.

Returning leaders for the Giants, including QB Toby Tigges, FB Christian Volpentesta and RB D.J. Penick, will have plenty of motivation heading into 2015. Last season, the Giants completed a perfect 9-0 regular season only to lose in upset fashion, 17-10 to Fenwick, in the IHSA Class 7A playoff opener.

“The Giants lost a lot of experience from last season’s team, leaving Horeni to build around some newcomers on offense,” according to a Highland Park News preview. “The good news is the offensive line is one of the strong suits of the team, plus Tigges is ready to handle the starting quarterback duties after playing as a reserve last season.”
