HPHS Students Awarded $10,000 'Service Above Self' Scholarships
The Rotary Club of Highland Park/Highwood recognized two recent Highland Park High School grads for exceptional community service.

From Rotary Club of Highland Park: At their June 4, 2018 Meeting, the Rotary Club of Highland Park/Highwood awarded Highland Park High School Students (HPHS) Campbell Flower and Namrita Narula with $10,000 each “Service Above Self scholarships. The “Service above Self” Scholarship Program is one of many ways the Club encourages and fosters their ideals of service. The Club encourages high ethical standards, service to the community, and advancement of international understanding, good will and peace. Applicants for the “Service Above Self” Scholarship must be pursuing a post-high school education, and selected candidates are awarded based on their academic performance, community service and leadership exhibited within school and the community. The Scholarship award is also based on a review of a student essay concerning the importance of community service and leadership, and how these concepts can be used to improve the quality of life in our communities.
Ms. Campbell Flower graduated this year from Highland Park High School and will be pursuing her bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University. She served as President of the HPHS Rotary Interact Club working with more than 100 students on volunteer service projects throughout the year. She played Varsity Softball for the Giants and served on Student Council. She volunteered more than 100 hours at Highland Park Hospital and throughout hear years at HPHS, she graduated with top honors in her class. Ms. Flower notes that “life only serving yourself simply isn’t a life worth living”; she is grounded on the philosophy that serving others is a way of life and she’s always seeking opportunities to become involved and help others.
Ms. Namrita Narula also graduated this year from Highland Park High School and will be pursuing her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, The Wharton School of Business. She is Co-Founder and Co-President of Girl Up, a group working to enable young girls to build a strong character through education and empowerment. She also served as Co-President of Science Olympiad, she served on the Executive Board of the Distributive Education Clubs of America, and numerous other clubs. She founded a non-profit organization called Seeds of Knowledge to educate students about the importance of nutrition while providing them with a year-round gardening experience. She is the proud recipient of the Seal of Bi-literacy from the State of Illinois, the Robert Barnard Character Counts Pillar Award, and the HPHS President’s Volunteer Service Award. She notes that, “Service Above Self means incorporating the principles of social justice, human rights, collective responsibility and respect for diversity into my daily life”. Service is unquestionably an integral part of her entity.
“The Rotary Club of Highland Park/Highwood is proud and honored to recognize Campbell and Namrita and award them for their exceptional service,” said Paul Munk, Chair of Rotary’s Scholarship Committee. “They are role models for service in our community and their involvement thus far will unquestionably have a lasting impact on those they have aided.”
