- Born in Chicago; graduated from New Trier High School
- Graduate of Amherst College (with high honors) and Harvard Law School (cum laude); fellow at Stanford University Creative Writing Center
- Recipient of the Order of Lincoln, considered the state’s highest award, honoring “individuals whose contributions to the betterment of humanity have been accomplished in Illinois”
- Served on the U.S. Senate Nominations Commission for the Northern District of Illinois, which recommends federal judicial appointments
- Lead counsel in numerous public corruption cases as a Federal Prosecutor
- Served on Illinois' Executive Ethics Commission and the Commission on Capital Punishment, among others
- Author of 10 best-selling works of fiction and two non-fiction books, selling more than 30 million copies worldwide; former President of the Authors Guild
- Awarded the RFK Book Award for Ultimate Punishment: A Lawyer’s Reflections on Dealing with the Death Penalty
