Living With Boomerang Millennials

Highland Park Public Library Presentation

The Highland Park Library will be offering a presentation and community conversation about “boomerang kids” on Thursday, September 10 at 7 p.m. With 20 million Millennials back on the home couch, Dr. Rosemary Lichtman will be discussing what forces are causing adult kids to return home as well as how parents can help foster their successful re-launch.

Today close to one-third of those between the ages of 18 and 34 live with their parents, an all-time high. With the economy still in disarray, many Millennials are underemployed or even jobless and they carry over $1 trillion in student loans. This degree of social change is transforming traditional models of family dynamics. Boundaries may become blurred between parents and children, whose passage into adulthood is often delayed. Drawing on the power of story to embody the issues, Dr. Lichtman explores ways to facilitate meaningful communication across the generation gap.

Dr. Lichtman, a Psychologist, blogs at her website, www.HerMentorCenter.com. She has written numerous articles and a book about the boomerang phenomenon, Whose Couch Is It Anyway? With advanced degrees from U.C.L.A and the University of Pennsylvania, she currently teaches medical students at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
