Metra Train Hits Pedestrian Near Highwood, Causes 'Extensive Delays'

Delays of more than 2 hours were reported on the Union Pacific North Line Thursday.

HIGHWOOD, IL —Delays of more than two hours have been reported on Union Pacific North Line after a train struck and killed pedestrian just south of Highwood Thursday morning. According to Metra, the incident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. and halted trains at the station throughout the morning.

Metra suggested commuters take the Milwaukee North Line and said CTA will be honoring tickets on the Red, Purple and Brown lines until further notice. Inbound trains began moving again after 7:30 a.m. but "possible operational changes may be in effect" and Metra advised riders to check for service or platform updates because of the extensive delays.

The Lake County Coroner's office confirmed the pedestrian was pronounced dead, the Chicago Sun-Times reported, while the Highwood Police Department was not immediately available for comment.
