HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Nine Highland Park High School qualified as semifinalists for National Merit scholarships. About 16,000 students nationwide remain eligible to receive more than $30 million in college scholarships in the spring, according to the Evanston-based National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Students can qualify for the semifinalist stage with their scores on the 2019 preliminary SAT test. To reach the finalist stage, students have to submit a detailed application, including an essay and recommendation from a high school official. The group will be narrowed down to finalists in February, and about 7,600 scholarships will be awarded by the end of the 2020-21 academic year.

This year's semifinalists include more than twice as many HPHS students as reached the semifinalist stage last year. Finalists from the class of 2021 are set to be announced in four stages starting in April and finishing in July.
