Dr. Ronald F. Albrecht was born in Chicago on April 17, 1937 to Frank W and Mabel D Albrecht. He grew up in Chicago, graduating from Lock Elementary School (1950) and Steinmetz High School (1954). He then attended the University of Illinois in Urbana, graduating with a BS (1958 –psychology and composition) and went on to the University of Illinois College of Medicine (MD – 1961). After an internship at Cincinnati General Hospital he returned to Illinois for a residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois Research and Education Hospital (1962-1964). Following residency, he was appointed Lieutenant Commander in the Public Health Service served two years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.

Dr. Albrecht then returned to the University of Illinois (UIC) and assumed an academic appointment, practicing and teaching at Illinois Masonic Hospital. In 1971 Dr. Albrecht became Head of Anesthesiology at Michal Reese Hospital and Medical Center (MRH), a position he held until 2005. In 1989 (with the merger between MRH and UIC) Dr. Albrecht was named Head and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois, a position he held until he retired in 2007. At that time he was appointed Professor Emeritus of Anesthesiology. He had been Chairman of an anesthesiology residency program for over 35 years, one of the longest serving leaders in Anesthesiology.
During his distinguish career he held many offices at the College of Medicine, in Academic Medical Societies, and national Anesthesiology societies. He served as President of the University of Illinois Hospital Medical staff, the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, the Chicago Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Association of Anesthesiology Chairs.
Dr. Albrecht was involved in research throughout his career, publishing over 200 articles in peer reviewed journals. His initial research activities centered on the actions of anesthetics on the cardiovascular system and the effects of anesthesia drugs on brain ischemia. He mentored many cardiac and neuroanesthesia physicians and scientists and was instrumental in establishing their research careers.
Dr. Albrecht was passionately involved in the education of medical students and anesthesia residents, influencing their academic advancement and professional future. He was influential in defining the medical school curriculum and the Anesthesia residency educational program. He trained over 500 anesthesia resident physicians, producing well trained, conscientious, and sensitive physicians for patient care. His devotion to education has produced a legacy of anesthesiologists whose patient care model was established by Dr. Albrecht. He was also dedicated to the advancement of his academic staff. He was tireless in mentoring his academic anesthesiologists to achieve their highest goals, always encouraging and reinforcing the importance of education, research, and excellent patient care.
Dr. Albrecht is most proud of his three children: Ronald F. Albrecht II, MD (Chief of Anesthesiology at Jesse Brown VA Medical center and at UIC), Mark B. Albrecht JD (an attorney in Los Angeles); and Meredith A. Albrecht, MD/PHD (Chief of Obstetric Anesthesiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin). He is similarly proud of his seven grandsons: Christian, James, Zane, Caleb, Peter, Joshua and Danial.
He is survived by his brother Jim and his family (Flora, James, and Laura and their families), his wife Joyce and his soulmate Verna.
As a friend, mentor, and trusted advisor, he touched the lives of countless, students, residents, and faculty. He will be dearly missed by all.
