Featured Obituary:

Suzanne Louise Brady, nee Schmidt, 91, of Lincolnshire, IL, joined her adoring husband, Donald George, and the Lord on 02-16-2022. Suzanne’s life was defined by charitable giving and love: love of knowledge; love for her community and country; love of family; and love of the Lord. Born in Janesville, WI, her early life was difficult, but she learned a charitable heart and perseverance from her father, a local entrepreneur who offered credit to his community at his grocery during the depression. And she learned a love of knowledge from her mother, a schoolteacher who was one of the first women to earn a science degree from the University of Illinois.

Suzanne followed her mother to earn a Bachelor’s of Arts from the University of Illinois, and she became a teacher herself until her duties to raise her children required that she curtail her teaching activities, . . . somewhat. She continued to substitute teach in her local community from 1954 until 1972, first in Decatur, IL, and then in Deerfield and Highland Park School Districts. Her teaching focused on advanced mathematics and science at the high school level, and from 1966 until 1972, she returned to full-time teaching of Title I disabled children as well as Hispanic children with special needs. She remained heavily involved with the American Association of University Women, serving as President of the Deerfield Branch from 1965 until 1973. She was elected to the Deerfield School District 109 School Board from 1971 to 1973, the first woman to hold this post in over 30 years.

She served on the Women’s Auxiliary of the First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield, IL, and served on the First Presbyterian Church Women’s Association for nearly ten years, its President from 1969 until 1972. She has remained a devoted member of the congregation for over 57 years. She was also a member and President of the Women’s Board of The Presbyterian Homes on the north shore of Chicago, and she worked tirelessly as a volunteer at the Homes for more than 50 years. The latter part of her life was dedicated to providing comfort and necessities to the residents of the Presbyterian Homes, nearly single-handedly running and managing a non-profit store providing for those residents for 37 years. She worked in this capacity in excess of full-time, entirely as an unpaid volunteer, until she finally stopped helping “the old people who need the store” in March, 2019, at the age of 88.

Never one to wear her beliefs and accomplishments on her sleeve, she showed her charity and devotion to Christ in deeds rather than words, through her commitment to her students; to her community; to her family; and to those who were blessed by her volunteer work.
