She was instrumental in bringing the annual meeting of the International Real Estate Congress to Chicago in 1994. She was also a leader at the local level, founding the Illinois Chapter of the International Real Estate Federation and serving as president of the Illinois Farm and Land Chapter of the Realtors Land Institute.

Besides her three children. she is survived by grandsons Benjamin Smith, husband of Caitlin Connelly, of Buffalo, NY; George Smith, husband of Katherine Sutula, of Lexington, MA; and great grandchildren Colin, Nell, Eamon, Annie, Conor, and Byron. Her husband Lester predeceased her in 2000, and her grandson Andrew predeceased her in 2011.

Along with her devotion to her family she will always be remembered for her keen intellect, passion for politics, and appreciation of travel, culture, and good food. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 14, 2019, at the Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home, 1787 Deerfield Rd, Highland Park, IL.
