Featured Obituary:
Philip Henry Dittmar Jr. (long time resident of Highland Park) passed away on Friday, June 19, at the age of 89, in Lake Zurich, Illinois. Phil was preceded in death by his parents Mabel and Philip, beloved wife Constance (Harkins) and daughter Kimberly (Shaver). He is survived by his daughter Karen, (Kevin Leach), son Mark, and eight grandchildren.
Born and raised in Evanston, Illinois, he graduated from Evanston High School in 1948. Adventurous in his youth, he raced homing pigeons, was part of a racing sailboat team, made a homemade canoe and worked at Homer’s Ice Cream Parlor. Phil went on to complete a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Northwestern University, in 1953. Upon graduation, Phil was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. He would recall his years travelling the world as a Naval Aviator with enthusiasm. Phil met Connie, the love of his life and his wife of 56 years, while stationed in Brunswick, Maine.
Phil served as a Commissioned Officer, Lieutenant, for four years, after completing the Navy’s flight training program. He served as a navigator, co-pilot and pilot in the anti-submarine patrol squadron. Phil qualified as Patrol Plane Commander, Squadron and Division Officer, P2V type aircraft, and flew in that capacity on active duty as well as in the reserve program, which he discharged from in 1968.
Phil began working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railway Co. in 1957, until he began his career in 1963 as City Engineer for the town of Highland Park, Illinois, where he served until his retirement in 1996. A long-time resident of Highland Park, he resided there from 1963 until 2015 when he moved to assisted living in Lake Zurich, Illinois.
Phil had a passion for gardening, was known for growing the best tomatoes, and beautiful flowers. An only child, he enjoyed travelling to Maine and visiting with his wife’s siblings and his nieces and nephews. An avid handball player, playing well into his 70’s, he continued exercising at the YMCA until the age of 85. He enjoyed reading, listening to music, baking bread, grilling on the Weber grill, and dancing. Phil was quiet yet attentive, kind, hard working and devoted to his family.Read more from Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home »
