Featured obituary:
Edith Van Tuyle Phelan, longtime resident of the Village of Golf, died June 19, 2019 at 94 years of age. Born in rural Scott County, Illinois, she attended the Manchester grade and three year high schools then chose Winchester, Illinois, to attend the school’s four year high school, graduating with the class of 1942. She gave the commencement address and was the recipient of the outstanding senior award along with classmate, Bennie Walker. Active in the rural 4-H Club activities, she was often selected to represent the county in the State Fair competitions held in Springfield.
She attended Northwestern University and was a loyal alum of the Class of 1946, serving as co-chairman of the 50th class reunion celebration. She was a president of the Northwestern Alumnae Association and was honored by receiving a Service Award. She was also active in the woman’s athletic association, a sports reporter for the student newspaper and a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
As a member of the Northwestern Woman’s Marksmanship Class rifle team nicknamed the “Pistol Packin’ Mamas,”they were victors of many matches against the regular men’s navy teams. A picture of the coeds appeared in the local newspapers and several service bulletins like The Stars and Stripes. Her sorority sisters reported a high volume of flower and candy deliveries at the university dorm and the mail volume increased significantly. Several letters contained proposals of marriage and Edith fondly recalls one of her favorites, obviously from a very lonely GI serving in a very distant outpost, reading “I done seen your picture. You is a dish! Will you marry me?”
Instead, she accepted the proposal of Dick Phelan, who, when graduating as a Northwestern engineer, also received a commission as Ensign to serve in the Navy. They married in 1945 and along with their four children, recently celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary.
Long a volunteer for the Children’s Home and Aid Society of Illinois, she was a candidate and then runner up for the Volunteer of the Year Awards given by the Chicago State Street Council. For many years she served as librarian for the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston and for a term as Village Clerk of Golf. She served fifty-four years as a judge for Cook County elections.
