Featured Obituary:

John T. Beatty, Jr., 80, former investment banker, devoted husband, father and grandfather, and military veteran, died peacefully in his Northfield home on February 7, 2017.

John was a graduate of Brooks School (North Andover, MA), Yale University, and The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He enlisted in the Army after completing his degree at Yale, serving as an intelligence officer in Europe, and was honorably discharged.

John’s career was distinguished by international assignments with Allis Chalmers in Asia, and as an Executive Vice President in the Chicago office of Smith Barney. He served on professional and civic boards, including the Village of Northfield Planning and Zoning Committee and the District 29 Board of Education. He also served on the vestry as Senior Warden at St. James the Less Episcopal Church in Northfield.

John was a lover of a wide range of music, taking his passion for opera to the stage as a supernumerary at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and his love of bluegrass music to numerous cruises and festivals.

He traveled the world professionally and with his family and friends, including throughout Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America.

In recent years, John proudly volunteered as a roofer, painter and electrician’s assistant with Habitat for Humanity in Vero Beach, FL, where he and his wife Marila retired in 2001.

He is survived by Marila, his wife of 55 years, their children JT, Eric (Janet Moran), and Emily (Mike) McCarthy, and four grandchildren.
