Featured Obituary:
Pilar Antonina (Nina) Recker, nee Sayurin, passed away peacefully at home on September 25th with her husband, daughter, and sister at her side. Beloved wife to Steven, loving mother to Julia, and cherished sister to Eileen; and an all-around awesome auntie, daughter/sister-in-law, cousin, niece, Ate, and friend to many. She is preceded in death by her parents Francisco and Lolita (nee Fernandez) Sayurin; and Max, her much adored canine companion.
She was born in Manila, Philippines. She came to the United States, specifically to Great Lakes, Illinois, when she was three years old. When she was in kindergarten, the teacher told her parents that they needed to teach her English, as they could not communicate with her and she could not communicate with them; she learned quickly. She attended Forrestal School, in Great Lakes, during all of her elementary school years, followed by Neal Junior High School, and North Chicago Community High School, where she graduated with the Class of 1974. During high school, she worked at various locations on Naval Station Great Lakes for the Navy Exchange in the Personalized Services department. She attended Barat College in Lake Forest and while going to school, worked at the Lake County Clerk's Office in the Small Claims department. After graduating from Barat College in 1978 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art and Photography, she went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois, Chicago. She had an exceptional eye for art and photography and would hold art openings at different galleries in the Chicago land area. While studying in Chicago, she worked at the law offices of Blatt, Hasenmiller, Leibsker & Moore. Many years later while living in Japan for six years, she taught English to private students as well as service members of the Japanese Self Defense Forces.
Pilar loved many kinds of music, but Emerson, Lake & Palmer was her favorite group. She had an appreciation for all kinds of genre of music, kept up on the Hollywood and arts scene, and could tell you anything that was happening in the music, Hollywood, and TV world. She loved attending music concerts, musicals, and loved to eat good food at fine restaurants.Read more from Kelley & Spalding Funeral Home »
