Featured Obituary:
Mary Josephine Butterbrodt Smigielski, 92, passed away on September 28, 2019 in Evanston, Illinois. She was born in 1927 on her family’s farm in Burnett, Wisconsin. After graduating from Beaver Dam (WI) High School and the Marquette University College of Nursing, Mary worked as a registered nurse in California and Milwaukee, WI and was a Second Lieutenant in the U.S Army Nurse Corps. She married Dr. Kenneth Smigielski in 1951 and enjoyed 50 years of a happy, loving marriage. Mary raised four children in Milwaukee and has welcomed seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Always busy and thinking of others, Mary volunteered at her church and children’s schools, delivered Meals on Wheels, started a 4-H club, served on the Marquette University Alumni Board, was President of the Wisconsin Medical Society Auxiliary and of the Milwaukee Archdiocese Home and School Association. Never one to be idle, Mary became an entrepreneur in midlife and, along with a dear friend, started what became a premier event planning business in Milwaukee called Special Occasions. In retirement, she volunteered at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, FL where she was instrumental in starting their membership program. Mary traveled to nearly all 50 states and enjoyed world travel, including trips to Europe, Africa, Central America, the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. After retirement, Mary lived in Longboat Key, FL before moving to Illinois to be closer to family. Mary was a feisty, energetic, adventurous, social, loving woman. Her love for her family, her generosity toward others, and her strong Catholic faith were the pillars of her life.
