"Stay Strong and Mahj On" Breast Cancer Fundraiser
Mah Jongg fundraiser to benefit the Cancer Wellness Center in Northbrook, Illinois.

Stay Strong and Mahj On, a 501(c)3 non-profit, is hosting its Second Annual fundraiser to benefit the Cancer Wellness Center. Started by three young daughters of breast cancer survivors, Alexis Miller, Moriah Berry, and Jordyn Fishman, the event raised $15,000 for the Center in 2015. "We decided to support the Cancer Wellness Center because all of our moms utilized their free of charge services during their breast cancer battles," says Miller, a Highland Park native and graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. All of the mothers are avid Mah Jongg players, hence why the organization revolves around this inter-generational game.
Miller says the organization targets local breast cancer organizations and donates the funds raised to support them. "We had an event in April 2016 in New York City and donated to Sharsheret, a Jewish breast cancer organization," explains Miller.
Although breast cancer and Mah Jongg may seem disconnected, the two have more parallels than one could imagine. Many people have approached Miller, Berry, and Fishman, saying that Mah Jongg has helped them to relax during their treatment, or that they continue their weekly Mahj groups because it helps them socialize and take their mind off of their struggle. Mah Jongg is not only a social game, but also helps invigorate the mind. There is research on Mah Jongg and cognitive stimulation, which is beneficial for those of all ages.
