Suspect Arrested In Connection To Highland Park Shooting

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — A suspect believed to be involved in a Highland Park shooting that hospitalized a man in critical condition this week has been arrested, authorities announced Friday.

On Monday, the Highland Park Police Department responded to the 300 block of Walker Avenue around 8 p.m. to investigate a shooting. The suspects had fled before officers arrived, so residents nearby were advised to shelter in place while authorities confirmed there was no threat to the public.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, was hospitalized in critical condition, but is steadily improving, police said.

Following investigation, officers identified a suspect, previously identified as a person of interest, who was seen speaking with the victim before the shooting. According to HPPD, the man was visiting the residence from out of state.

On Friday, law enforcement in Fort Wayne, Indiana responded to a separate crime in their jurisdiction and apprehended the man. Police there saw the warrant for the man's arrest issued out of Lake County and notified Highland Park authorities.

The suspect, who was not named because he has not yet been charged in Illinois, will remain in custody in Indiana on local charges.

He will be extradited to Illinois at a later date, according to HPPD.

"The City greatly appreciates the partnership of law enforcement agencies in responding to and assisting with this investigation, especially Fort Wayne, Indiana, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, and neighboring jurisdictions who assisted on-scene," officials said in a statement.
