Chicago – Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Emil Bach House (7415 N. Sheridan Road) and the historic Monroe Building (104 S. Michigan Avenue) will be part of a unique collection of architectural treasures taking part in Open House Chicago 2015. The annual architectural festival, slated for October 17-18, will provide guests an opportunity to visit these notable structures. The weekend event is open to the public and will be marked by tours from 11 am – 4 pm on Saturday and Sunday for the Emil Bach House and from 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday for the Monroe Building. Both properties have been faithfully restored and are owned by COL (IL) Jennifer N. Pritzker’s, IL ARNG (Retired) Tawani Enterprises.
Originally built in 1915, the Bach House, unlike many other Wright properties, sits on a small city lot along a busy urban setting. The shape of the structure gives it dynamic qualities with the house being one of a short series of cubic, geometric, slab-roofed homes designed in the early twentieth century. The Bach House was designated a Chicago Landmark on September 28, 1977, and entered into the National Register of Historic Places on January 23, 1979. The private residence was restored by a team of notable architects, preservationists and designers and now serves as a luxury vacation rental and event space. It stands to be one of only a handful of Wright homes available for overnight guests.
The Monroe Building (104 S. Michigan Avenue), designed by Holabird & Roche in 1912 is a Michigan Avenue masterpiece that also houses the famed Pritzker Military Library and Museum. The exterior is characterized by granite and terra cotta in a Gothic-Romanesque style and the sloping green Spanish-tile gabled roof harmonizes with the height of the Gothic-inspired University Club. Both the Monroe Building and the University Club, form a dramatic gateway into the loop.
