Highland Park Man Who Stabbed Woman Charged: Police

The 39-year-old fought with local juveniles who tried to keep him from leaving the scene, police said.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — A Highland Park man who allegedly stabbed a woman multiple times at a home they shared was delayed from fleeing the scene by kids, police said. Emergency personnel got a call around 10:15 p.m. Friday that someone had just been stabbed in the 1600 block of McGovern Avenue in Highland Park.

At the scene, they found a woman in critical condition with several knife wounds. She was taken to Evanston Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, according to Highland Park Police Cmdr. Jon Lowman.

Police found several juvenile witnesses with minor injuries. They got a description of the suspect and started searching the area with the help of officers from neighboring jurisdictions and a K9 unit from the Lake County sheriff's office. A man matching the description was found nearby and arrested, according to police.

Jose Gonzales, 39, of the 1600 block of McGovern Avenue, Highland Park, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery – all felonies – and two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery for allegedly stabbing the woman with whom he shared an address, police said.

Investigators determined it was "not a random act" and Gonzales man knew the woman he allegedly stabbed.

Gonzalez had a bond hearing Saturday, he was being held in lieu of $300,000 bond.

According to the Lake County sheriff's office, he also has pending separate charges of driving drunk without a license.

In that incident, Gonzalez was arrested shortly after 10 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2017 and charged with DUI after police were called to a verbal dispute, according to police and court records.

Highland Park police later stopped him around the corner from his house and arrested him in the 800 block of Laurel Avenue.

Gonzalez has an attorney status hearing set for Jan. 17 with a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 31, according to court records.
