Youth Class Schedule – June 15 – August 14, 2015

6 Week Classes

4th, 5th, & 6th Grade

Theatre Games and Story Theatre

Come play with us! Learn the games that form the core of the legendary Piven training method. In this class, students will learn to build ensemble, explore improvisation, and adapt and perform stories. We can guarantee that you’ll never see freeze tag the same way again! For new and returning students.

Choose one of the following, or register for more than one for a more intensive experience:

6th-8th Grade

6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Improvisation and Scene Study

Use the fun and impulsive play of improvisation to create lively characters and realistic relationships. Students will rehearse scenes and work with their scene partners and memorize their lines under the guidance of Piven’s teaching staff. The class culminates in a showcase for friends and family!

6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Theatre Intensive

Twice as long as the other classes for this age group, students get a stronger and more intensive experience of the Piven technique with the chance to work within an intimate ensemble modeled on our advanced youth companies, Performance Project and the Young People’s Company. Taught by a senior member of the faculty, students build their talents in theatre games, improvisation, story theatre, and scene study.

High School Improvisation and Scene Study

In this class students will explore improvisation as a tool for the actor. This is a great class for high school students new to Piven and for experienced actors who want to expand their improv skills. Students will use games to build ensemble, explore improvisation, and adapt and perform stories. Students will also to apply their improvisation to scene work and begin creating new works and adaptations developed by the ensemble.

High School Scene Study Intensive

This class uses the Piven technique to explore the scene study rehearsal process. Students apply improvisation to characters and relationships in contemporary plays. Under the guidance of a senior faculty member, students work with advanced material to stage fully rehearsed scenes.

High School Monologue and Audition Technique

Explore adapting our ensemble-driven technique to the art of performing solo. This workshop is the perfect opportunity for high school students to develop their monologue skills and get a leg up on their next audition for school productions, professional theatres, and conservatory or college programs.

Camps

One-Week Piven Intensives for 4th- 8th Grade

Join Piven for a fun and intensive training experience! Students will spend their mornings learning how signature Piven games & improvisation can be applied to bring creativity and excitement to ensemble exercises and scene work. In the afternoon, guest artists will lead workshops complimenting our core curriculum, in which students have the opportunity to build skills in topics such as stage combat, puppetry, and much more! This is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of our work over a fun-filled week. We offer two sections of this class during each session: one for students entering 4th and 5th grade and another for students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.

7th – 12th Grade Musical Theatre and Piven Technique

This class uses the Piven training technique to delve into the very different world of musical theatre. Students will learn how to unite strong singing technique with authentic and compelling acting choices. Singing experience and musical knowledge required for participation in this class.
