10-Year-Old Swept Through Hinsdale Culvert During Heavy Rain Event

The child was unhurt, except for some minor scratches.

HINSDALE, IL — A 10-year-old child was swept through a culvert by a strong current of water during the Oct. 14 heavy rain event. Many Chicago suburbs received several inches of rain that day, including Hinsdale. Police said the village was notified at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14 that a child had been swept through the culvert in Katherine Legge Memorial Park. The 10-year-old emerged unhurt except for some minor scratches.

The Tribune reported that a Burr Ridge police officer found the child, where he had been discharged from the drainage pipe into the creek near Woods Pool Park, which is east of Katherine Legge Memorial Park.

Hinsdale police said he was treated by Hinsdale paramedics and was released.

Now, the village has launched an investigation into the incident. The village said the goal of the investigation is to determine the best means to prevent this type of occurrence from happening again. The village will be implementing steps in the very near future with this goal in mind.
