$184K Overrun On Hinsdale Project 'Hurts': Official

The problem is an exception to the trend in Hinsdale, officials say.

HINSDALE, IL — The Hinsdale Village Board last week approved a $184,000 cost overrun on a water main project in downtown.

"That hurts," Village President Tom Cauley said at the board meeting. "There's nothing we can do about it, but it hurts."

The additional costs are associated with a "variety of issues" on a project at Washington Street and Chicago Avenue involving a century-old water main, Trustee Neale Byrnes told the board.

Trustee Luke Stifflear said the cost overrun was an exception to the trend in Hinsdale.

"We've got a very, very good track record on this," Stifflear said. "It's not something that is consistent with our practice."

Cauley agreed.

"When you look at the road repairs, water main repairs and the sewer repairs we've done over the past 10 years, I think we've always been within 5 percent of the budget, usually to the plus," he said. "So while this is 20 percent, it's the only miss we've had. When you look at the grand scheme, we're still pretty close on our budgeted amounts."

Addison-based John Neri Construction Co. is handling the construction project.
